I Will Be There
The sound of Ashley and Jackson’s angry voices filled the living room of their hotel room. It was a rare occasion when they got in an argument. But they were both tired, and a little cranky.
“I don’t know what you what me to do, Jackson!” Ashley yelled.
“All I wanted to do was spend some time with you, when we’re not on set, I barely see you anymore!” Jackson yelled back.
“Oh, and I’m the busy one? You’re always on the road with the band!”
Jackson’s livid face softened, and then turned sad.
“Jackson, I don’t want to fight, okay? I’ll see you later, after the event,” and with that, Ashley left to hotel to go to the Donate A Dress charity event she was promoting.
As soon as Ashley left, Jackson felt awful. Ashley was right, he did travel more than she did, yet he was the one yelling at her for having no free time. He wanted to make this up to her. Jackson went to the store, and came back with dozens of roses and candles. He called the front desk, and told them to bring up the best food the hotel had to offer around 6:30. He was going to apologize to his queen the best way he knew how.
After getting everything ready, Jackson took a shower. There was still a lot of time left before Ashley returned, so he jumped onto the massive bed and flicked on the flat screen television hanging on the wall of the bedroom. It was on the local news channel, and Jackson was just about to change the channel when a breaking story flashed across the large screen.
“Breaking news! The building where the Donate A Dress charity event was being held has erupted into flames. Fire fighters are on the scene now, but there is no word on how many people are still in the building.”
The color drained from Jackson’s face. He was frozen, like a cold statue. He couldn’t move. It took minutes before he came to his senses and ran out of the hotel room. The only thing he could think of was the last words they had exchanged. Jackson sped down the street, and he could feel a knot in his chest tighten as he neared the building and heard the blearing sirens. He could see stacks of black smoke rising from the building, and he fought back the stinging tears he felt. He was vaguely aware of a police officer telling him to go back, but he got out of the car and ran to where some of the people in the building where getting looked at by paramedics. His eyes searched for the face he desperately needed to see.
And then he found what he was looking for. He spotted Ashley, covered in ashes with her usually smoothed hair wild, standing next to an ambulance. At the same moment, Ashley saw him and let out a little whimper. Jackson ran to her, and Ashley met him halfway. They embraced, and Jackson felt his whole world come back to together again.
Not wanting to let her go for even a second, Jackson whispered in Ashley’s ear, “I am so sorry.”
They stared into each other’s eyes, and Jackson knew she was sorry too. Her teary, but relieved, eyes said it all.
“Let’s go home,” Ashley said, and Jackson wrapped his arm around her waist and walked back to the car.
When Jackson pulled into the hotel parking lot, he shut off the car but didn’t get out. His green eyes stared straight ahead.
“Jackson…it’s all okay. It’s over now, and I’m here. I’m not going anywhere,” Ashley crooned, and took his hand in hers.
Jackson’s bottom lip trembled, and then he let out a sigh. He turned and kissed Ashley’s hair.
“I was so scared. I thought I lost you forever.” Jackson said.
“You have me forever, and nothing will ever change that. Not even a burning building,” and Ashley tilted her head upwards and found his lips. When they parted, Ashley found Jackson smiling, with his eyes sparkling.
“There’s something waiting for you upstairs,” he said with the smile Ashley loved so much. They walked hand in hand to their room, and Jackson opened the door and led Ashley inside. The room was filled with vases and vases of red roses, and every flat surface had a lit candle on it.
“Jackson, I-”
But before she could finish, she was scooped up into a passionate kiss.
